I have suffered from severe sleep apnea for over ten years. The usual treatments did nothing in my case. After a long ordeal, I finally decided to have sleep apnea surgery. During my research, I learned that there are different procedures. The most common procedure, which is done in every specialized clinic in Germany, is related to the soft palate lift and has to be done again after 10 to 20 months. This procedure was therefore out of the question for me.
In my search for an alternative, I came across the Sleep Apnea Association. I contacted Mr. Musiolik there and was then well advised by him during the entire treatment phase. If I had any questions, I could always turn to him. Based on the experience the association had, he was able to recommend Dr. Frey in Heidelberg to me. Mr. Musiolik also accompanied me to the first consultation with Dr. Frey.
Dr. Frey took a lot of time for me during the initial consultation. Beforehand, he took a picture of my jaw during the first appointment. He then explained the origin of the disease, its effects and consequences, including the secondary diseases. Then he explained his method of treatment, especially in my specific case, based on the x-rays.
In contrast to the usual soft palate lift, Dr. Frey operates on the jaw. Although the operation is very complex and is associated with a longer, in my case up to 10 months, recovery process. However, the treatment should last the whole life and not be repeated after 10 to 20 months.
In the run-up to the operation, a number of examinations, images and scans were taken, which enabled the doctor to work with millimeter precision. For this, Dr. Frey has the most modern technology and unique know-how in his clinic. He works with other professionals who support him before the operation and afterwards.
It is true that this treatment is not cheap overall. But if you consider that the alternative operation would have to be performed several times in a lifetime, the price-performance ratio is quickly put into perspective.
I felt very well advised and in good hands with Dr. Frey. The operation itself went without complications. Also, a polyp was still discovered in the preliminary examinations, which he immediately removed during the operation. The stay after the operation in the clinic itself was unfortunately not so pleasant. Again, there is a lack of well-trained workers, so the organization and nurse care suffer a bit. I always hoped that nurse Violetta was on duty, who was very attentive to the proper care and the timely distribution of medication.
Dr. Frey himself came by several times to check on my condition and you could also call him at any other time.
I am very satisfied with the course of the surgery and the healing process. The loud snoring was already much better after the surgery and then disappeared completely as soon as the swelling went down after the surgery. I have become 10 kg lighter with a continuous tendency. In the meantime, I no longer have any significant impairments. I can eat almost everything again and the permanent splints are also off. The sleep apnea is gone and the result looks very satisfactory.
