Cured from sleep apnea on 22.06.2017

I am 54 years old and come from Magdeburg, so about 500 km from Heidelberg. For years I suffered from overweight (obesity) and sleep apnea. Of course, this brought side effects: high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, signs of diabetes, aching limbs, etc. About three years ago I weighed 148 kg on the scales. I tried to get my weight under control with diets and sports. Sometimes I lost 8 to 10 kilos, but they were quickly lost again out of frustration.

I never got along with the sleep mask(CPAP). I had up to 40 breathing pauses an hour, my residual oxygen dropped to about 73 percent during the night, and I snored my head off. In 2015, I contacted Prof. Sailer from Zurich for the first time and had myself examined by Prof. Sailer in the clinic. He determined that I had a congenital "jaw malposition." My trachea had a diameter of only 4 mm. Normal is 15 to 20 mm. Under these circumstances, according to his opinion, it is absolutely impossible to lose weight. To lose weight, you need oxygen, and I was lacking it. Unfortunately, my health insurance did not cover the costs of the surgery with Prof. Sailer. So I was devastated at first, but my pounds had to come off.

I decided against sleep apnea surgery and dedicated myself to obesity. My stomach was reduced in January 2017 (a battle with the health insurance, which I finally won) and was able to reduce my weight to 86 kilos. In February 2017, I became aware through an internet search that Dr. Frey was also performing this surgery. I made my first contact with Dr. Frey in June 2017. He explained to me (in the presence of my wife, of course) the surgery, the side effects, etc. After much deliberation, I decided to have the surgery in November 2017. I have to be honest, I was scared. As I said before the surgery, I had 86 kilos, still breathing stops, oxygen levels at rock bottom and loud snoring.

The surgery went well. I was able to eat my first liquid food in the evening. My face swelled up and it hurt (I hated Dr. Frey at this point!). After about three days, the pain subsided. My swelling went down about two weeks later. Six days after the surgery I was discharged and I was able to drive the 500 km home. Five weeks after the surgery I was fit for work again.

With the speech it was not so good, this had to do with the fact that during the operation a nerve (left to the lower lip) is "torn" to me. I did not speak slurred, but it strained me. After the metal plates were removed in June 2018, it is also much better again.

I had the orthodontic treatment performed in Mannheim by Dr. A. Frey. I was very satisfied there. The cooperation with the clinic is excellent. Since I still have my teeth straightened, I still wear the braces. But I have moved the treatment to Magdeburg since July 2018.

My body weight is now about 78 kg. I no longer take any tablets (high blood pressure tablets, heart tablets). My breathing stops are history, oxygen level is well above 90 percent, snoring is gone. My quality of life is excellent. My doctors, my wife and especially myself are satisfied. The procedure was a success and I would do it again and again.
